The next game from The Darkside Detective developer Spooky Doorway (off-topic: what a great studio name!) is the first-person mystery game The Séance of Blake Manor, where players don their detective hat to investigate a woman’s disappearance from a remote, secretive, supernatural hotel in 1897 Ireland. During The MIX’s Spring Games Showcase, the developer and Swedish indie publisher Raw Fury announced a partnership to publish the game.

In the game, Detective Declan Ward heads to Blake Manor to interview and interrogate a group of suspects, learning about their motivations and investigating them to uncover hidden clues. Record details, then make connections and cross-reference your evidence to solve Evelyn Deane’s disappearance and unearth the truth about the hotel.

The Séance of Blake Manor is inspired by Irish mythology. Each character has their own secrets and stories. The influence of Victorian-era Ireland can be found in the game’s themes of religion, class divide and the supernatural. The gameplay features immersive detective mechanics that allow you to make logical leaps to find clues and contradictions. Impactful choices are made through branching dialogue, changing how you might solve the mystery.

The game’s comic book art style is inspired by the artwork of Mike Mignola (Hellboy), Edward Risso (100 Bullets) and Tim Sale (Batman: The Long Halloween). Every frame appears (but is not) hand-drawn and items are examined through comic book panels. A period-appropriate soundtrack also sets the tone for the game and adapts to location and gameplay as the story continues.

Developed by Spooky Doorway and published by Raw Fury, The Séance of Blake Manor is being developed for PC (Steam). As with The Darkside Detective, I expect it to also launch for consoles at some point.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
