The RPG Maker series is a great introduction to game development, providing you with all the tools, coding (or “events”), and assets needed to make your own full-fledged game. In his five-star review of the latest title, RPG Maker WITH for Nintendo Switch, DDNet editor-in-chief Matt praises its ease of use and ability to share assets (plus entire games). But I think the title needs to be available for more than one platform to get things rolling — which makes the announcement of two PlayStation versions exciting! They will be released in Feburary 2025.

There’s more good news about RPG Maker WITH coming to PlayStation: the PlayStation and Nintendo Switch versions will be cross-compatible.

A packshot of the PS5 version of RPG Maker WITH.RPG Maker WITH promises to be more accessible than past instalments in the series thanks to a user-friendly interface and intuitive controls. It’s easy to begin, whether you want to create simple or complex assets/functions. For inspiration, check out what other creators have shared. You can share your work too, even assets and unfinished projects. You might even inspire another user (or more)!

Thankfully, creating and/or downloading assets is not necessary. The software is loaded with, as described by NIS America, “oodles of assets.” There are premade sample games, characters, enemies, locations, items, etc.

In Japan, RPG Maker WITH launched for Nintendo Switch last April. The PlayStation versions will launch on January 30, 2025.

Developed by Gotcha Gotcha Games and published by NIS America in the West, RPG Maker WITH will be released for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on February 21, 2025. It is currently available for Nintendo Switch.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
