Emotional, narrative-driven game Copycat launches for PC later this month

My heart aches just thinking about this cat.

The key art for Copycat. One cat sits outdoors at night, looking up through a light-filled window at another cat.

Copycat stood out at this year’s Not-E3 after being featured in Future of Play Direct (Season 5). That trailer haunts me due to its quick shift in tone. In the beginning, Olive adopts a cat named Dawn. But don’t let the colourful visuals fool you: she starts bonding with her new human but soon finds herself stuck outside, the victim of a nefarious and jealous stray cat. Dawn wanders around the neighbourhood, alone, such a small girl in a big world. It’s heartbreaking. Will she be able to get her new home back? Australian/Ukrainian collective Spoonful of Wonder has announced that Copycat will be released later this month as scheduled, and there’s a new release date trailer for the game.

Copycat is a complex, three-act story. Play as Dawn while she wanders alleys, rooftops, and fences while trying to find her home with Olive. But if she makes it there, will Olive recognize her? How could Olive possibly choose between the two cats? Or maybe Dawn was the copycat all along…

Despite having a cat protagonist, Copycat explores the dark emotional depths of the human condition. The philosophical narrative is meant to make you stop and think. It brings up questions about our existence and place in the world. (It sounds like an existential crisis waiting to happen! But in a good way.) You will reflect on themes of home, loneliness, and belonging.

While playing as a domestic cat, a nature documentary will narrate your movements. As a cat, use intuitive and smooth cat-like controls to climb trees, fight dogs, and explore the neighbourhood. You can also be mischievous by knocking things to the ground, hiding in cardboard boxes, and meowing at anything that moves.

Thought has definitely been put into how Copycat sounds. Daniel Bunting’s diverse score includes jazz, lullabies, and tribal music. The game is fully voice-acted by local Australians.

Developed by Spoonful of Sugar (and published by Neverland Entertainment and Nuuvem), Copycat will be released for PC on September 19 (September 20 for those in AU/NZ). Console versions are being developed.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
