City building plus Cthulhu? I don’t hate it. Worshippers of Cthulhu was announced today at the Future Games Show Spring 2024. It is described as a captivating game steeped in Lovecraftian horror that invites players to assume the role of a cult leader guiding their followers through eldritch rituals and the art of city-building with the end goal of awakening an ancient deity: Cthulhu. Worshippers of Cthulhu is set to launch in Early Access for PC later this year, with a console launch expected for 2025.
While leading the Cult of Cthulhu, players will decide the fate of their followers, perform eldritch rituals, and master the art of city-building… all in a world that blurs the line between sanity and madness until it no longer even exists. You don’t want to be a harbinger of destruction, but rather a herald of cosmic rebirth. It’s time to embrace the inevitable evolution that is fate. Humanity is insignificant, pitiful, and fleeting. Only by awakening the Great Old One can humans transcend this sad, sad existence. One act can shake the foundations of the universe. With Cthulhu’s awakening comes a cascading effect that will reshape the cosmos while a new order emerges.
As a leader, your decisions will shape the destiny of each follower. With they toil, conquer, or devote their lives to dark rituals? Manage the daily intricacies of cult affairs, like proclaiming dogmas or announcing celebrations. Since the cult needs to be formidable and strong if the Old One will awaken, you’ll need to establish and expand cities across many islands. Oversee production chains, manage your workforce, and navigate ruins that take up valuable space. Sustain your followers, yes, but as the world flourishes you’ll become intimately connected with the deity.
Members of the cult believe in Cthulhu, but that doesn’t encompass everyone in the world. Non-believers can be tools too, though: use them for land, resources, and workers. Depending on your strategy, you can conquer, pillage, sacrifice, or convert them. It may take some time to form that strategy, though, as you begin with limited knowledge and gradually unravel the mysteries of the supernatural realm.
So why Early Access? Worshippers of Cthulhu’s Steam page states it is to gather the most honest feedback from as many players as possible. With Early Access, players will begin with two polished chapters of the game, each its own small story. When the full version is launched, the developer expects the basic functionality of the game to pretty much stay the same but the full version will allow players to go deeper into the Cthulhu and city-building mechanics.
Developed and published by Crazy Goat Games, Worshippers of Cthulhu will be released in Early Access for PC via (at least) Steam later this year. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions of the game are expected in early 2025.
