In August 2020, Matt published an article on DDNet begging for Date A Live: Ren Dystopia to be localised in English. It’s taken four years, but the visual novel is finally set to launch worldwide in thus year. The Date A Live franchise follows a student name Shido who learns that he can seal away Spirits’ powers to protect the world. One thing though… to seal a Spirit’s powers, he has to date her and she has to fall for him. You know, the typical boy meets girl, boy tries to suppress girl’s powers scenario. A tale as old as time. Date A Live: Ren Dystopia features an original story and introduces a new character with Ren. It has been available for PlayStation 4 in Japan since 2020; the upcoming worldwide release will be for PC via Steam.
Date A Live as a whole begins as the Earth has been plagued by spacequakes for 30 years. The calamities are caused by enigmatic entities called Spirits. One day, Shido Itsuka finds himself face to face with a disillusioned Spirit. It’s only then that his sister reveals that he has the unique ability to seal a Spirit’s powers away, but as I said – he’ll have to sweep said Spirits off their feet. Only he will be able to save the world, facing each Spirit with total sincerity.
In Live A Live: Ren Dystopia, a newly-emerged spirit ends up in Deus Ex Machina Industry’s crosshairs. Shido defends the Spirit, named Natsumi, and seals her powers. Origami caused the world to be transformed and inverted, but Shido reshapes the world and seals Origami. One evening, Shido has a strange dream about a mysterious voice calling out from darkness; the next morning, he finds a container featuring a snake under his pillow. He’ll search for the owner… but when they try to open it…
The game has nine routes and more than 15 endings. Make the “right” decisions to help Shido grand the Spirit’s wishes. Make the wrong choice, though, and it’s game over. Shido will meet up with over ten returning characters alongside the brand-new Ren. There is an in-game library to help those new and returning to the series, with character profiles and terminology.
On PC, Date A Live: Ren Dystopia will be available in a standard edition and a Digital Deluxe Edition. The Digital Deluxe Edition of the game includes a digital art collection (13 pages, with character art and rough art), localisations of two audio dramas (Natsumi Encounter and Origami Friendship) plus one short novel (Ren Masques), and the official soundtrack (27 tracks).
Developed by Idea Factory and published by Idea Factory International, Date A Live: Ren Dystopia will be released for PC via Steam worldwide in 2024. It is currently available for PlayStation 4 in Japan.
