Square Enix continues on its drive to remake, remaster, or re-release just about every game from its classic library. The next title to get a makeover is Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song. A game that many fans would say is one of the best of the publisher’s best B-tier JRPG property.

Minstrel Song is a remake of the original SNES title. It was first released on PlayStation 2 in 2005, and while it was received well in Japan, it fell flat in the west, with a Metacritic average of just 58. I wouldn’t pay too close attention to that, though. The lowest review of all, on Gaming Age, slams the game for things that modern audiences just love: “Most traditional RPG fans will find themselves bored and frustrated with SaGa’s extremely open-ended and unforgiving game design, but those select few who find themselves excited by these prospects will proclaim this one of the most satisfying experiences in recent memory.”
Imagine how people would respond to Elden Ring back then.
Anyhow, the remaster will launch on PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android, and PC (via Steam) in “Winter” (so Summer for us Aussies). We’re being promised “improved playability and new elements” to go with the HD graphics. Square Enix is generally good in remastering its classics to improve their playability with fast forward and other features, so we can probably expect the same here.
It really is a pretty-looking game.
