Bigpoint acquires 49Games’ development team

Online games specialist, Bigpoint, just got a whole lot bigger, acquiring development studio 49Games.

That acquisition bring an additional 40 people into the Bigpoint fold, and is actually the fourth acquisition for the rapidly growing company in the past 18 months.

The acquisition isn’t a complete one though. 49Games retains rights to its multiplatform technology, assets and licenses.

Unfortunately it does mean that a developer that previously produced console games will now focus entirely on online games. 49Games’ development team has been responsible for (amongst other things), Winter Stars, Winter Sports 2011 – Go for Gold, Summer Challenge 2010, RTL Wintersports 2010

In a release, CEO and founder of Bigpoint, Heiko Hubertz, said “The team at 49Games is one of the best development teams in the console sports-games industry. We’re very excited to add them to the Bigpoint team for our online games.

“Together with our development team, we’re going to continue our mission to deliver our users top-quality gaming fun.”

The other three recent acquisitions for Bigpoint are Radon Labs and Elofd in Berlin last year and the purchase of Planet Moon Studios at the start of 2011.

Hubertz suggested that the company will continue to look for more acquisitions. Looks like this browser-based gaming specialist is one to watch, even if it isn’t Zynga just yet.
