The 24 Games of Christmas! Day #18; Sonic CD

Seeing green and red? It must be Christmas!

Every year the world patiently (or not-so-patiently) counts down those 24 days to Christmas; there’s even calendars filled with little treats to help keep the young ones patient.

Then the big day rolls around and it’s filled with great food, great company and, of course, presents.

Christmas is the best time of year, and so to do our bit in celebrating we’re doing our own advent calendar. Each day we’ll unveil another game that has touched us in some way over the year – whether because it’s a work of interactive art, laugh-out-loud funny or just so weird it blew our mind.

So be sure to check back each day for a new game suggestion to fill your Christmas break!

7 Days to Go! Sonic CD

While we’ve included a few retro re-releases in our Christmas countdown, Sonic CD is special for two reasons. Firstly, it actually has a bit of content added in the form of a new unlockable character. Secondly, it’s available on nearly every download platform imaginable, save for WiiWare.

Sonic CD is generally regarded as one of the blue blue’s very best 2D platform outings, but being originally released on the dubious Sega CD, it’s no wonder why it’s a bit more obscure. It contains beautiful (dialog-free, non-gameplay interrupting) cutscenes, as well as a time travel system and some of the most insane level design in the series. Really, the level design can get to the point where Sonic is sporadically spinning around in endless loops and making you dizzy.

Not only can players pick between Sonic and Tails, they can now alternate between the American and Japanese soundtracks. This is the very best console port of Sonic CD to date, and it’s a good thing that you can get it just about anywhere.
