Warner Bros interactive entertainment is bringing five-on-five arena combat set in the Lord of the Rings universe to consoles this Fall.

Set to tie in with the upcoming The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey film, Guardians of Middle-earth will bring online PvP starring many of the film and book series’ notables exclusively to Xbox Live and the PSN.

Guardians of Middle-earth brings up to 10 players together in five versus five competitive multiplayer battle arenas in the epic setting of Middle-earth. The game offers more than 20 iconic guardians, including Gandalf, Sauron, Gollum, Thráin and many more, for players to control in player versus player (PVP) matches. Gamers will have the ability to connect with other players via an in-game voice communication system, as well as access to a comprehensive online stat and leader board system where they can track friends’ victories and defeats, and more.

Is it really that hard to get a quality LotR game on the market? There’s such an immensely rich history and world to explore and yet really no game outside of the hack’n’slash titles (on the PS2 and Xbox) have felt like triple ‘a’ games. Kind of sad really for a property like this.

We’ll see if GoMe will be any different. It does sound kind of neat, as it’s not really trying to be anything other than a straight up arcade-style battle game. Still though, I think fans of the property might want something just a tad deeper as a Hobbit tie-in. I know I do.

  • Yeah, there's just… nothing about this that gets me excited, which as a huge fan of the LotR series, kills me.  It's like Game of Thrones games – why can't they do a better job with these titles? :p

  • It's like there's something about high fantasy that nobody in the industry can properly grasp. Bizarre.

  • Five on five combat? Really? Really?

After Snowblind turned Lord of the Rings into a Call of Duty clone, this whole series has lost it for me.

Say what you like about EA, but Battle for Middle Earth 2 was a spectacular service to Lord of the Rings.
