Most publishers wait for a game’s online community to really die before switching off the servers. But not Nintendo. Oh no. On May 20, 2014, it’s switching off its Wi-Fi Connection rendering everything from Mario Kart Wii to the DS Pokemon games unplayable online.
“As of May 20th, 2014, the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service will be discontinued and it will no longer be possible to use online features of Nintendo DS/DSi and Wii software such as online play, matchmaking and leaderboards,” a statement from the company said.
While I don’t have access to usage numbers, I can’t for the live of me imagine that people have stopped playing Wii games online completely. Sure some would have migrated to the Wii U (though that console isn’t exactly selling to excess), but there would surely still be people who haven’t made the upgrade yet, or still like playing their Wii games even though they have a Wii U.
I still like the occasional game of Fortune Street, for instance. Given that there isn’t a Fortune Street Wii U on the way, Nintendo’s leaving me high and dry.
Nintendo, you can make this up to me by producing a Wii U Fortune Street.
