Ho, ho, ho, and Merry Christmas!
Christmas is a wonderful time of year. If you’re in the north then you get to enjoy snow, hot drinks, the wonderful colours of decorations and the smell of a freshly-cut Christmas tree. If you’re south of the equator, it means blistering hot weather, beer, and the wonderful colours of decorations and the smell of a freshly-cut Christmas tree.
Christmas is a time for good food, family, and friends. It’s a time for celebration, and Christmas is the time of year where it’s okay to be a kid all over again, and count down the days to gifts and celebrations one day at a time. Each year we get into the spirit of the season ourselves with a countdown of our own; the 24 Games of Christmas!

Root Letter is another really good example of the kind of nostalgic experience that goes hand in hand with the nostalgia that Christmas can bring on. Root Letter’s subject matter veers into some pretty dark places, of course, but the underlying concept of it – following a pen pal that you had decades ago but lost contact with – is so overwhelmingly romantic that it has to be considered ‘Christmassy’ in tone.
It’s also a good game to play around Christmas, because it’s a little more relaxing (as a visual novel), low pressure, and relaxing to enjoy. As a break from the high-end action games that we play through so much of the year, it’s games like Root Letter that give you a chance to reset for the busy year of gaming that 2017 looks certain to set us.
