House Of Ashes: Why copy/pasting horror mechanics doesn’t work

House of Ashes is a good – even great game. It’s highly cinematic, filled with excellent set-pieces, and is a plain-good, fun time.

However! The developers of this series – which includes Little Hope and Man of Medan, have made each title with roughly the same gameplay and mechanical structure, and that doesn’t always do the horror justice. What worked for a ghost ship tale doesn’t necessarily work for a monster action-themed one.

In this video I discuss this, and the potential implications for The Dark Pictures Anthology moving forward.
