There is something special about Japanese horror, so any new Japanese horror game is worth keeping an eye on. Today, publisher Nippon Ichi Software announced that horror adventure game Lens (formerly known as Renzu) will be released in Japan for PlayStation and Nintendo Switch this August. In it, the protagonist is cursed by a (not-so-) trivial incident and has to uncover its origins before the curse consumes him.
Hayato Tsukumo, a writer for an occult magazine, hears a rumour that people are disappearing in S City. The missing individuals had all visited haunted locations before receiving strange smartphone messages. While this rumour is interesting enough, Tsukumo continues covering another story… until he receives a video with a strange message attached. Unable to resist, he watches the video. Out of the blue, a bloodstained camera app installs itself on his phone. Then comes the message: “You have been cursed.”
Suddenly, a woman’s voice whispers, “Find… my… precious…” before Tsukumo loses consciousness. Since that day, his life has been turned upside down. Only he can see the black marks that have started to appear, and he is physically worsening each day. The curse is slowly draining his life away, but he refuses to wait for death. Instead, he resolves to survive by breaking the curse. He starts investigating the rumours, and it isn’t long before he finds horrifying truths hidden within the curse.
Explore haunted locations searching for clues, using only a flashlight and the cursed camera app that can capture spirits. In the form of an image, I mean. Not, like, ghost-trap. Look for general weirdness and investigate what feels off. Capturing specific spirits will unlock a Spirit Video, vital for curse-breaking clues. Locations include a cemetery, an abandoned house, and a shrine.
Developed by Orgesta and published by Nippon Ichi Software, Lens will be released in Japan physically and digitally for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch on August 28.
