Welcome to Digitally Downloaded’s weekly catch-up news feature, the catch-up coffee. I will bring you the best news you may have missed with each issue. Grab the biggest mug you’ve got, fill it with your favourite brew, and catch up with us (and our favourite news anchor, Dee Dee)!
Today, I’m mixing it up a little. Instead of my usual coverage, I’ve got all the news from Whitethorn Games’ Winter Showcase. In addition to showing off some games, Whitethorn and special guests Laura Kate Dale, Latin American Games Showcase, Safe In Our World, and Stream for a Cause discussed their shared commitments to fostering a more inclusive, accessible, and representative space for developers, industry professionals, and gamers alike. If you’d like to watch the entire showcase, you can do so here.
The Neat Things DLC is available for Calico
I love surprise releases, and this is one of them. Calico’s Neat Things DLC launched for PC and Nintendo Switch as the showcase was streaming. Search the island for neat things in the Neat Things Scavenger Hunt, visit Clover’s Cove to uncover a new area and meet a new mermaid friend, befriend new cuddly animals (a mischievous raccoon, a smiley axolotl, a playful elephant, a loveable golden retriever, and a familiar cat), play two new mini-games at the Cutie City arcade, create an aquatic-themed café with new furniture, and discover new world interactions like playing in piles of leaves. If you’re interested, Calico’s accessibility features can be found here.
A new demo for Spray Paint Simulator launches this week
A demo is already available for Spray Paint Simulator, but a new one will launch this week with a new level and no time limit! No time limit is huge for me, and an important accessibility feature in the games I spend a lot of time with. (Spray Paint Simulator has many accessibility features, which can be read here, and there will likely be more by launch.) With this new demo, you can complete two jobs for customers and paint to your heart’s content in Free Spray Mode, featured in the game’s latest trailer. Spray Paint Simulator will be released for PC via Steam this year.
Two new characters revealed for Kernel Hearts
Kernel Hearts’ Lead Character Artist, Momo, has revealed two of the allies you will meet while fighting your way up the tower of Babel in the action-packed multiplayer roguelike game. The game incorporates challenging hack-’n-slash gameplay, role-playing, and roguelike elements; the aesthetics are anime-inspired. Battle up a celestial tower, building upon your skills with each death. Eradicate monstrous angelic enemies and dethrone a god to save the world. Kernel Hearts will be released for PC (Steam) and Xbox Series.
Three Whitethorn-published titles are coming to PlayStation
Slime Heroes, Magical Delicacy, and Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island will be released for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 later this year. In Slime Heroes, become a slime with skills and battle through corrupted enemies. Magical Delicacy is a Metroidvania-lite-meets-cooking game about making magical treats. As for narrative adventure game Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island, I could go on for hours… but I won’t. To keep it short, you take on the role of Alex, who has been shipwrecked on an island in the Mediterranean. She soon learns the island is home to the Greek Gods, though they have all forgotten their past.
