New Canadian indie studio Buffalo Buffalo has revealed Fresh Tracks, a game that blends skiing, roguelite elements, and evolving music. Set in a god-filled, mythical Nordic realm, each playthrough has new narrative layers, rewarding progression, and lore. The announcement also comes with a trailer that features loads of gameplay footage and explains the game a bit more. Fresh Tracks is expected to be released for PC and consoles this year.
Take on the role of the protagonist, Skaii, and glide through a snowy forest to the rhythm of an ethereal pop soundtrack while an Aurora lights up the night sky. It doesn’t stay that way for long, as the path quickly diverges and Skaii will have to fight, jump, and dodge obstacles and minions through the befallen land of Norwyn. Each new trail unlocks new abilities, companions, and original music tracks.
These are the key features of Fresh Tracks, from Buffalo Buffalo:
- Rhythm-Driven Gameplay: Movement, combat, and progression seamlessly sync with a dynamic, evolving soundtrack.
- Story-Rich Roguelite Elements: Each playthrough unravels new narrative layers, rewarding progression with more profound lore and character-driven moments.
- High Replayability: Roguelite mechanics encourage players to refine their skills while unlocking upgrades and strategies for future runs.
- A Fully Original, High-Quality Soundtrack: Fresh Tracks features a rich, genre-crossing soundtrack that enhances immersion and dynamically responds to every player movement.
Hailing from Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada), Buffalo Buffalo is a new studio with a mission to create depth and bring meaning to video games in unexpected ways. The studio also has multiple unannounced projects backed by the Canada Media Fund and Creative BC in the works. To sum it up, the new studio focuses on impactful gaming experiences, has multiple games on the go, and has government backing. I’m keeping my eye on this one!
Developed and published by Buffalo Buffalo, Fresh Tracks will be released for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series this year.
