Who needs friends, anyway?

I don’t know where the past year and a half went. I could have sworn I’d just barely stopped posting about Dokapon Kingdom: Connect, but my last post was in June… June 2023. It is a Compile Heart-developed remake of Sting’s Dokapon Kingdom (2007) for Nintendo Switch, best described as an RPG disguised as a board game; you can read Matt’s review here. Last year, Sting released a remaster of another retro Dokapon game for Nintendo Switch in Japan, Dokapon! Sword of Fury. (The original launched in 1998.) Soon, it will get an English-language release for PC. Could this be a sign that an English version is coming to Nintendo Switch?

Dokapon! Sword of Fury falls into many categories. It is a party game. It is a board game. It is a turn-based roleplaying game. The goal is simple: outsmart your friends to become the richest person in the world after crossing the vast map. Fight against monsters, rob stores, and defeat your friends to the point that they might become frenemies. Maximize your profits using alliance systems and events (ie. the Tenka Ippin Battle tournament).

Key elements of RPGs are at the core of Dokapon! Sword of Fury: battle enemies, buy and equip weapons, and level up. Money is everything, and anything goes as long as you’re okay with it. Will you keep your morals, or lose them along the way due to the quick profits of thievery and plundering? Will you stick with your posse, or plan to betray them? If you’re going to be successful, expect to play dirty.

Below is the PC announcement trailer, from Gematsu. The latest trailer for the Japanese Nintendo Switch version can be seen here.

This remake of Dokapon! Sword of Fury has some contemporary necessities, including autosave and display settings. And there’s customization galore! If things are moving too slowly, you can choose to make the game progress 5x faster. You can substitute battle background music with tracks from earlier titles, set the number of weeks to play, adjust the balance, and/or give yourself an advantage.

Developed and published by Sting, Dokapon! Sword of Fury will be released in English for PC via Steam. Sting describes the release date as “soon.” The game is currently available in Japan for Nintendo Switch.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
