It looks... heavy.

Nintendo Switch 2

There has been little news posted to DDNet this week, thanks to me being more sick than I have been in years, but I have risen from my half-dead state because this news is just too important to miss. Today, Nintendo released a first-look trailer for its Nintendo Switch successor, the creatively named Nintendo Switch 2. Information is still relatively sparse, minus years of patent-fuelled speculation, but here is what Nintendo has officially shared regarding the hybrid console.

The trailer shows off a bigger, beefier console. Nintendo Switch 2 is taller, wider, and thicker. In handheld mode, it will inevitably be heavier—possibly substantially. (That’s no good for those of us who don’t use a Steam Deck or similar consoles because they’re too darned heavy.) The console has a larger screen and a redesigned kickstand. It retains a 3.5mm headphone jack, and the speakers appear closer to those of the Nintendo Switch OLED than the original.

The Joy-Cons have also been redesigned. Right now, the only colour seen is black. The left Joy-Con features light blue details, while the right has coral pink highlights. The Joy-Cons now have a part that slides out where it connects to the console, complete with fiddly bits. They do appear to attach magnetically, but that possibility remains unconfirmed.

Nintendo Switch 2 will be backward compatible with Nintendo Switch games, both physical and digital, though some will not be supported or fully compatible. That’s no surprise; that’s pretty standard. The trailer does show off what appears to be a new Mario Kart game, but again, nothing is confirmed.

Nintendo Switch 2 is confirmed to launch this year, though I expect to wait many months until then. More information about Nintendo Switch 2 will be revealed during a special Nintendo Direct, scheduled for April 2. Nintendo will also host events in 15 cities, where fans can get early hands-on time with the console. (Yeah, good luck with that. Madness is imminent.) Here are the locations and dates:

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
