It’s that time of year again! We’re counting down the days to Christmas with our own little “advent calendar” – one new game to play over the holiday season each and every day.

As the year winds down, things get really busy. We’ve got Christmas parties to attend, the end of year rush on work, and all the rest of it. But it’s also a time where we take holidays, find a moment to relax, and enjoy the company of others. This is the best chance to catch up on some key games that you might have missed from the year… or just play that multiplayer game that you’ve been waiting to get a crew together for.

Day 20: Broken Roads

There has been a real resurgence of RPGs with an isometric perspective in recent years. Baldur’s Gate 3 obviously led the charge, but there have been others, from Pathfinder to Disco Elysium, and the standard of games in this genre does tend to be very high. That is why it would be a shame to miss Broken Roads because it’s one of the more niche examples of the genre, but it is also excellent.

Part of what makes it so good is that it’s one of the rare story-driven games about Australia that doesn’t use Australia as a punchline. This is an earnest, honest RPG set in an apocalyptic Australia. And as an added bonus, for all of you enjoying a white Christmas right now, Broken Roads looks as blistering hot as an Australian summer is, so you can enjoy a bit of what makes it so weird when we have people dress up in full Santa gear in this climate.
