Every year I ask Santa for a Chocobo...

It’s that time of year again! We’re counting down the days to Christmas with our own little “advent calendar” – one new game to play over the holiday season each and every day.

As the year winds down, things get really busy. We’ve got Christmas parties to attend, the end of year rush on work, and all the rest of it. But it’s also a time where we take holidays, find a moment to relax, and enjoy the company of others. This is the best chance to catch up on some key games that you might have missed from the year… or just play that multiplayer game that you’ve been waiting to get a crew together for.

I like to think of Christmas as “the season to catch up on at least one JRPG.” 2024 in particular has been so packed with big games to play that I would be surprised if anyone’s backlog didn’t increase exponentially this year. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the ideal one to scratch off for several reasons: 1) You can relive the nostalgia of playing VII for the first time, and nostalgia is such a big part of the Christmas season. 2) It’s big even by big JRPG standards – you’ll find the open world ripe for exploration! 3) It’s just such a good game you should play it anyway.

Also, I know it’s the wrong season for swimsuits in Christmas for half the world, but down here in Australia Christmas and beaches go together, and there’s a scene where you get to enjoy Tifa and Aerith in their bikinis. I consider this a Christmas celebration.
