The 24 games of Christmas! Day #16: Rise of the Ronin

Don't miss one of the finest historical epics in years.

It’s that time of year again! We’re counting down the days to Christmas with our own little “advent calendar” – one new game to play over the holiday season each and every day.

As the year winds down, things get really busy. We’ve got Christmas parties to attend, the end of year rush on work, and all the rest of it. But it’s also a time where we take holidays, find a moment to relax, and enjoy the company of others. This is the best chance to catch up on some key games that you might have missed from the year… or just play that multiplayer game that you’ve been waiting to get a crew together for.

Day 16: Rise of the Ronin

Read our review here.

I’m bringing Rise of the Ronin into the little Christmas countdown for a very simple reason: I think this game is being unfortunately overlooked by a lot of people that would really love it. It’s a big, sprawling, open-world game with a soulslike approach to combat and difficulty, and then backs that up with a lot of authentic history during one of Japan’s most interesting periods of conflict and drama. Yet for whatever reason the same people who bought into Ghost of Tsushima have overlooked what is a vastly superior storytelling experience.

If you were one of those that missed it (and in fairness it did come out at an absolutely horrible time this year), then use this as a reminder to remedy that. Not only will this game last the distance, but you’ll learn a bit about Japan at the time and enjoy a stunning rendition of the country.
