It’s that time of year again! We’re counting down the days to Christmas with our own little “advent calendar” – one new game to play over the holiday season each and every day.

As the year winds down, things get really busy. We’ve got Christmas parties to attend, the end of year rush on work, and all the rest of it. But it’s also a time where we take holidays, find a moment to relax, and enjoy the company of others. This is the best chance to catch up on some key games that you might have missed from the year… or just play that multiplayer game that you’ve been waiting to get a crew together for.

Day 10: Silent Hill 2

The ash from a town perpetually encased in white fog is basically like snow, right? It’s essentially Christmas, isn’t it? Okay, so perhaps Silent Hill 2 isn’t the most thematically appropriate game for Chrismas, but this is an experience that deserves to be experienced with as few breaks as possible. It’s stunningly cinematic, intense, and absorbing, so it you can play it in one sitting, or over just one or two days, then you’re playing it the way it was designed to be. If you’re ever going to find the time to do that, it’s over Christmas.

Silent Hill 2 is arguably 2024’s biggest surprise. Expectations were fairly low on account of it being Bloober Team, but then it landed and everyone realised that Bloober loved the base game so much that they fully committed to doing every second of it justice. They nailed it. It’s a masterpiece and a near-perfect example of how a remake should be.
