For those of us with social anxiety, merely going out into the world can be extremely draining… but at least our heads don’t explode! The same can’t be said for Giraffe, the star of A Week in the Life of Asocial Giraffe. His social anxiety is so bad that his head explodes if someone merely speaks to him. Developer Quail Button officially (and timidly) unveiled the comedic point-and-click adventure game today, though no information about its release is available.
Giraffe lives a fulfilling life. He listens to lo-fi music. He likes drinking matcha and eating sushi. He cares for his succulents. He even writes poetry! But he can’t avoid the social situations he is anxious about. (I’d be anxious too, if my head could explode!) Too bad he lives in Friendly City, the Friendliest City in the world. Friendly residents want to chat with Giraffe. They want him to solve their problems. They want him to listen to their entire life stories. And they’re everywhere!
The game spans one week of Giraffe’s life. Life can’t just stop because of anxiety (or so they say), so Giraffe has lots on his to-do list: head to the laundromat, browse antique stores, buy groceries, work out at the gym. He’s got to be smart. He’s got the sneak stealthily. He’s got to avoid the city’s population at all costs while completing these tasks.
Each chore is comprised of a level, filling up Giraffe’s week. The levels combine the logic and humour of point-and-click adventure puzzles with the tension of stealthy titles.
“With A Week in the Life of Asocial Giraffe, we wanted to make a game that captures the internal conflict and unease that comes with wanting social interaction, while paradoxically being too timid to engage,” said the writer and level designer at Quail Button via a press release. (A little odd to not name the person, no?) “Because even the most extroverted people still have moments of shyness. In that sense, there’s a little Asocial Giraffe in all of us.”
Developed and published by Quail Button, A Week in the Life of Asocial Giraffe has been announced for PC via Steam. (I’m begging for a Nintendo Switch version to help me further avoid people!)
