When Type-NOISE: Shonen Shojo was announced at Indie Live Expo 2024, it was one among many titles that caught my eye. Unfortunately, the news didn’t make it into my catch-up about the event, but I want to rectify that! Today, a demo for the mind-bending graphic novel adventure RPG about teens healing their trauma launched on Steam; it features one of the main characters and showcases the title’s gameplay.
In Type-NOISE: Shonen Shojo, six teenagers awaken in a mental prison of their own making, but none remember their arrival to Noise Scramble City. The location mirrors their internal traumas, resulting in a labyrinth. The developer describes Noise Scramble City as a topsy-turvy Tokyo-like world, from graffiti-coated underground sewers to haunted, marionette-filled classrooms. (Haunted and marionettes? That’s one of my worst nightmares.)
The game’s story and puzzle-solving elements are closely integrated. Solve intricate mysteries to put together the puzzle pieces of the teens’ pasts to escape this alternate reality. With each stage, gather clues and awaken the teens’ memories. Clues are hidden deeply within every hallucination, so scour each environment for memory fragments hidden in plain sight. Uncovering their past will reward you with hints to solve what lies ahead.
The demo puts you in the shoes of Hiyori, a streamer with a nasty habit of telling white lies to get noticed. You’ll connect her past traumas to her deception issue through abstract, story-rich puzzles with narrative tidbits. Players who complete the demo and submit feedback through an entry form (only until December 2024, JST) can have their name added to the game’s full version.
There are five other main characters in Type-NOISE: Shonen Shojo. Zena is considered the game’s hero, which works for the icy superhero team show fan. (I wonder what she’d think of Agatha All Along?) Itsuki is angry and tormented by jealousy. Honoko is stubborn and skeptical. Kaito is filled with self-doubt due to a scar causing him to be ostracized. Soto is meddlesome yet honest. There is also Specter, the city’s Whimsical Watcher.
Developed by MYU and published by Dank Heart, Type-NOISE: Shonen Shojo will be released for PC via Steam in 2025. It will support English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese.
