Starting a game in the middle of a story arc often means remembering details from predecessors. Some people remember every single major or minor plot point, while those like me may only remember a handful of the major plot points and almost no minor ones. NIS America is solving the possible memory issues regarding The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II with a new story overview trailer that recaps what happened in The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak is set during a time of postwar reparations. The Calvard Republic is dealing with unexpectedly large economic growth, but there is also the issue of public unrest when it comes to immigration and the government. The story begins in the city of Edith, where Van Arkride is self-employed Spriggan (a bounty hunter and a “problem solver” for cash). High school student Agnès Claudel — the daughter of Calvard’s new President — comes to Van for help. She wants to find the Oct-Genesis, orbments that are the last made by her late scientist grandfather.
Van and Agnès end up forming a party with another six people, including a famous actress, an employee at a private military company, and Van’s mentor who was previously presumed dead. Terrorist group Almata is not happy with the Oct-Genesis search, causing the Arkride Solutions Office clan to need other factions as allies. Two of Van’s childhood friends also show up.
Turns out, as a child Van has become host to a demon lord, one of five Vagrants Diaspora. This means he was able to become a monster named Grendel. Supervised by who is now Almata’s leader, Van was a test subject for a cult. This person, Gerard Dantès, claimed Van’s power to escape the cult before taking over the terrorist group to strengthen his demonic power. Major spoilers here! After an intense battle, Van takes the power back from Gerard, killing him. Van then goes to another plane to imprison himself, thus saving humanity. This doesn’t last, as his team and artificial intelligence find a way to get to Van. They save him, they defeat the demon lord, and all his hunky dory until The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II…
The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II is the second instalment of the Calvard Arc (AKA the Trails through Daybreak saga). Peace has returned to Calvard, thanks to Almata no longer being a threat. But a shocking series of murders causes the wheels of fate to move once again. Factions become active, some following the letter of the law to uncover the truth and others wanting to capitalize whenever possible. This is the backdrop when an unexpected visitor comes to Van, who then begins his own investigation into the murders.
Developed by Nihon Falcom and published by NIS America, The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II will be released in the West for PC via Steam/Epic/GOG, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch on February 14, 2025. It originally launched in Japan in September 2022.
