Super Monkey Ball is cute. Hatsune Miku is cute. Sega has its hand in both. It just makes sense to bring the real pop princess to Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble, the latest game in the long-running series. Paid DLC for guest characters Hatsune Miku and Godzilla will launch next week. The game will also be upgraded to version 2.00 (for free); this update includes a new patch that adds lots of new content.
Two new guest characters will be available as DLC, and they couldn’t be more different. First up, cheery virtual singer Hatsune Miku. The second one? Godzilla, the mighty King of Monsters. When playing as Miku, groove through stages collecting musical notes instead of bananas. Or cause destruction as Godzilla, with banana pick-ups replaced by trains. You can see both in action in the trailers below.
In addition, the Nijisanji Ukiuki Cup Outfit Set will be available as a free download. It includes a branded t-shirt, a branded monkey ball, and a costume inspired by Saegusa Akina.
The 2.00 update adds Super Punchy Brawl to Battle Mode, a new stage to the Banana Hunt game, enhancements to Adventure Mode including a “fun” set of new rules, a random character selection feature, the ability to buy in bulk from the in-game Shop, an option to carry over save data from the demo, colour options for players’ names, and more.
In Super Punchy Brawl, knock your opponents off the map using a big boxing glove. Scattered panels provide buffs to the boxing glove, making them up to twice as strong and causing more damage. Like Black Panther’s suit, you can store damage from an opponent’s punch up to two times; store more damage and it’s easier to knock off your opponents. At the end of the round, the player with the most points wins.
As I mentioned, the 2.00 update includes a “fun” set of new rules for Adventure Mode. Time Attack includes a Banana Bonus option where you collect bananas to reduce your time. The No Miss Challenge tests how far you can go with a single life. Super Speed makes the balls roll crazy fast. Monkey See lets you see the world from inside your ball. There are more difficult courses in Ultimate EX stages. A quick retry feature lets you restart a stage without pausing the game.
Developed and published by Sega, Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble is available for Nintendo Switch. The 2.0 update and new paid guest character DLC will launch on November 26.
