Have you ever wondered what a version of 1980s America (Showa 66) would look like if overtaken by Japanese culture and influences? Okay, probably not. But it’s a great setting for a game! In Showa American Story, the Japanese economic bubble in the USA never popped; immigration surged and Japanese citizens could use their wealth to buy most of the land in the country. The result? A version of America that is heavily influenced by Japan. The latest trailer for Showa America Story showcases its story, a cast of strange characters, and over-the-top combat.
American and Japanese cultures merged quickly, creating a surreal life for those living in the US. The game follows a teenage stuntwoman named Chouko. Along with her sister, she’s heading to Hollywood for an audition… until assassins attack, dumping Chouko in the desert. A mysterious catastrophic event changes the world, destroying its social order.
After some time, Chouko is mysteriously brought back from the dead. She finds herself in a post-apocalyptic world containing zombies monsters, and human survivors of varying backgrounds. Chouko does not know what happened to her or her world — or why she has a mysterious and frightening power. Searching for answers, she sets off on a journey across America that will inevitably change her forever.
The combat in Showa American Story is free-flowing, fast-paced, and brutal: You fight hordes of zombies and monsters by moving, attacking, and dodging. Melee and ranged weapons are available to you, along with some rather odd ones. Use what you want to suit your preferred combat style.
Showa American Story isn’t only about combat, it’s about humanity and nostalgia. It brings you back to the ’80s to explore stories of survivors from different walks of life while following Chouko’s personal journey.
Since she is travelling, Chouko’s new home is an RV. You can upgrade it and customize it. Unlock abilities through “Living Activities” gameplay using resources found while exploring and in combat: new weapons, clothing options, collectibles, EXPs, and even nostalgic mini-games can be found.
Developed by Nekcom, Showa American Story will be released for PC via Steam and PlayStation 5 in 2025. The PC version is published by 2P Games.
