When The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak launched in the West earlier this year, DDNet’s Editor-in-Chief Matt described the JRPG as “a new starting point for a new, epic arc.” That arc has already continued in Japan with The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II when the people of Calvard are thrust into looming chaos once again due to a shocking series of murders involving a mysterious crimson beast. Multiple factions are created, some by those who want to abide by the law to find the truth and others who would rather capitalize on any new developments. The spriggan Van Arkride gets involved with his own investigation of the murders. JRPG murder mystery? That can’t be a bad thing! NIS America is now prepared to bring The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II West in February 2025.
By the year 1209 of the Septian Calendar, the threat stemming from the Alamata is gone and peace has returned to the land. It lasts for awhile until something terrible happens: a CID special forces unit (yes, a whole unit) is brutally murdered. Nobody knows who could have done it or why. The authorities try to contain the chaos but fail miserably considering the criminals ready to make their moves.
An unexpected guest prompts a spriggan named Van Arkride to begin investigating the massacre, Who did it? Why? And, surprisingly (or maybe not?), how does it relate to Agnes’ search for the eighth Genesis? I really love this quote from NIS America’s press release describing the story: “A crimson beast’s roar. A chance meeting with a boy and girl, both embroiled in a mysterious search. These are the circumstances that lure Arkride Solutions down the trail of an inescapable fate.”
The main characters you will meet in The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II are Van Arkride, Agnes Claudel, and Elaine Auclair. Van Arkride is the founder of Arkride Solutions and tends to take on jobs that walk a fine legal line, though he does good for many people. Agnes and Van went their separate ways after taking down Alamata. Agnes is a student at a prestigious school and has shown great determination while working at Arkride Solutions. She has recovered seven of the eight prototype orbments that brought her and Van together. She may even have a crush on him. Elaine is a bracer affiliated with the Calvard branch of the Bracer Guild. She and Van dated during high school until he disappeared for seven years; their relationship has become tense but fighting Almata together seems to have quashed that.
Van and company won’t always be together during the game, as members of the group will sometimes break off to take care of tasks concurrently. This results in each act containing multiple chapters to be played in any order. Each chapter features different characters.
Developed by Nihon Falcom and published in the West by NIS America, The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II will be released for PC via Steam/Epic/GOG, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch on February 14, 2025.
