Mirthwood‘s visuals are, in fact, enchanting — that’s what first caught my interest. But its genre hooked me: it is a medieval fantasy RPG life/farm-sim adventure game. Mirthwood is set to launch for PC next week but that won’t be the end. The team behind Mirthwood has revealed a roadmap about what to expect post-launch. The six updates begin soon after the game is released and through to the middle of 2025. New features will include (but is not limited to) fishing, companions, seasonal content, and co-op multiplayer.

Mirthwood begins with you fleeing a war-torn continent and ending up in this enchanting land where NPCs always go about their daily lives. Create your new life by building your homestead, exploring various regions, engaging in battle, and shaping the world around you. Move at your own speed, but stay busy with farm-building, cultivating/harvesting, rearing animals, upgrading, exploring the six diverse regions, embarking on quests, investigating mysteries, and participating in real-time combat brawls. (You can learn more about the farming and homestead systems in Mirthwood here.) You will get improved skills based on your actions, giving you access to skill cards that unlock powerful modifiers. Befriend or insult any NPC, unlocking new social interactions. You can also recruit companions and pets to follow you on your journey.

This month (September), Mirthwood will get polished with hotfixes, patches, performance optimization, achievements, and additional controller support.

October will bring Version 1.1, the Fish Are Friends Update. It brings fishing, new housing upgrades, companions, an NPC relationship tracker, and social actions to the game.

Your taxes are due in November with Version 1.2, the Death and Taxes Update. It includes quests (normal and generated), but it also gets a bit darker with funeral events and ailments. Just in time for flu season here in Canada!

Mirthwood will get festive for the holidays in December. Update 1.3, the Feast and Festivities Update, features time festivals, season content, and Steam Deck Verified Support. It will also bring new world events, crops, and cooking recipes to the game.

Looking ahead to next year, Q1 2025 will see the release of the Baby Boom Update, centred around making a family. There will be the ability to marry, dedicated ceremonies, children (that you create yourself!), inherited abilities, and the option to play on as your child once you die.

From Q2 2025 onwards, Mirthwood will continue to be updated with co-op multiplayer, modding support, Steam Workshop, and the first (presumably paid) DLC expansion.

Developed by two-person team Bad Ridge Games and published by V Publishing, Mirthwood will be released for PC via Steam on September 11.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
