What do you get when you combine an Assassin’s Creed designer and a bestselling author known for his Warhammer storytelling? An emotional indie walking simulator, of course! The combination seems to be cooking up something special in Tales from the Mabinogion: it is a narrative-rich, third-person adventure game that travels through Welsh folklore using only the Welsh language. It is the first full video game adaptation of The Mabinogion, the earliest Welsh prose stories. Today’s game reveal also came complete with a trailer.

Become King Pryderi, trying to navigate a wilderness shrouded in a deadly, cursed fog. The mystery behind the cataclysm that left the Kingdom of Dyfed in shambles must be unravelled, and who better than you? The lethal fog is constantly an issue as you follow the trails of the beasts of Annwn, descending deeper into the quest. The fog isn’t the only thing out to get you, so watch out for mythical animals.

The Welsh-language experience is helped by National Eisteddfod Crown winner Rhys Iorwerth, who translates the ancient stories. Voice actor Phil Rowe provides narration, and music from celebrated Welsh folk musician Oliver Wilson-Dickson adds an atmospheric layer to the enchanting world.

The landscapes are as important to the characters in Tales from the Mabinogion. Navigate sweeping hills, confront hounds, traverse treacherous landscapes, and sometimes just enjoy the view. The visual style is based on oil paintings by artists like Erin Hanson, Vincent Van Gogh, and Claude Monet.

Stevan Anastasoff chose to focus on the Welsh language, explaining in a press release, “Welsh is a beautiful, ancient, musical, magical language – the language that inspired Tolkien’s Sildarin, the language of the Elves. There is no more fitting way to tell a fantasy story!”

Tales from the Mabinogion is Anastasoff’s first indie project; in the past, he’s worked as a game designer with franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Warhammer. A talented team of creators are attached, and the game includes contributions from New York Times bestselling author Gav Thorpe.

The game will be released for PC via Steam in 2025.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
