The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is the first game in the series to star the titular character, which is ridiculous

It took 19 games. 19!

A Legend of Zelda game… actually starring the titular character in the main role?! It really should not have taken this long for a mainline title in The Legend of Zelda series to actually put Princess Zelda at the front and centre, but it finally happens in action-adventure game The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. And it is super cute to boot! Zelda’s time in the spotlight begins on Nintendo Switch this September. The game was announced during today’s Nintendo Direct.

The first game in The Legend of Zelda series launched back in the mid-80s and since there there have been over a dozen games in the main series alone (and so many more spin-offs). They all revolve around Link and Zelda. Link is brave, sure, but is he really that much better than Zelda? Argument one: she is a princess and princesses always win. Argument two: she is magical. Argument three: she is way prettier and way smarter than Link. That’s right, I said it. Zelda is better than Link.

There are a couple more notable things about The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom when compared to the other mainline games in the series. It is the first 2D game since 2015’s The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes, but that was focused on multiplayer so it’s not entirely a fair comparison. But this is: Echoes of Wisdom is the first single-player 2D game in the series since 2013’s A Link Between Worlds.

Here is the game’s description, courtesy of Nintendo:

It’s up to Zelda and her wisdom to save the kingdom of Hyrule in a brand-new story in The Legend of Zelda series. The people of Hyrule are being stolen away by strange rifts that have appeared, with a certain swordsman among the missing. Team up with the mysterious fairy, Tri, and use the power of the Tri Rod to create echoes – imitations of things found in the environment. Then recreate those echoes whenever you like to solve puzzles and defeat enemies. Use echoes of water blocks to reach new heights, make bridges out of old beds, throw rocks at foes – or find your own creative combination of echoes to do things your way. You can even create echoes of monsters to fight at your side in combat. Join Zelda in her quest to rescue Hyrule.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will be released for Nintendo Switch on September 26.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
