I’m sorry for being many hours late, lovely readers. Saturday was insane and I hit a wall yesterday. This article got delayed entirely because of where it falls chronologically, not because the games are lacking. They aren’t. It was actually quite difficult to narrow it down to a handful to include with my highlights. Some games from Canadian developers look incredibly interesting (shoutout Might Yell and Kitfox!) and those went straight to the top of my must-have list.
Game highlights
Ale Abbey (Shiro Unlimited, Hammer & Ravens)
“In beer we trust.” Ale Abbey is appealing because, well, beer. It’s a management sim about running a monastery while also brewing beer. Stay in God’s good graces by making sure the monastery prospers. Build living quarters, libraries, breweries, the Refectory, and the Abbot’s office. When it comes to the monk beer (as I’ve come to call it), there are no recipes. You’re not just a brewer, you’re a true beer alchemist. Choose equipment depending on your needs before blending the perfect batch of beer by adjusting the quantity, quality, and mash temperatures. Store it for aging or sell it right away. If you trust your fellow monks, they’ll make the beer for you.
Ale Abbey will be released for PC via Steam later this year.
Tempopo (Cult Games, Witch Beam)
Tempopo is developed by Witch Beam, the Australian developer behind the mega-hit Unpacking. The titular Tempopo are mischievous and uncoordinated at the best of times, but Hana can use her conducting skills to work with them and find musical flowers that have been scattered across the sky. It is a puzzle game with 60 levels, each one on an island. Each one begins with the planning phase when you tell the Tempopo what to do when the music starts. Find the perfect, inventive configuration to solve puzzles with multiple Tempopo performing different roles.
Tempopo will be released for PC/Mac/Linux via Steam, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series, and Xbox One.
Demonschool (Necrasoft, ysryd games)
I wanted to write about Demonschool in my Guerrilla Collective highlights, but it just barely didn’t make the cut. There were too many great games! (A common problem with most showcases this Not-E3, actually.) So I was very happy to see it again and took it as a sign. Turn-based tactical game Demonschool has appeared at the PC Gaming Show before, but this year it comes with a release date. Motion equals action in the stylish game. Faye and her band of misfit friends have to defeat “big weirdos” between the human and demon worlds, while also navigating university life on the mysterious island.
Demonschool will be released on September 13 for PC via Steam/Epic, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series, and Xbox One. Yep. Friday, September 13. Great marketing tool.
Unbeatable (D-Cell Games, Playstack)
Music is illegal in Unbeatable, but it’s a narrative rhythm RPG so it’s time to do some crimes! And the music in this trailer is electric. Beat and her band are on the run. She makes friends with others that the cops aren’t so fond of, often for more viable reasons than simply making music. Talk with people and help them out, play concerts, punch cops. Then run from said cops. And why are there monsters around? The rhythm gameplay only requires two buttons: up and down. It’s doing it correctly that complicates matters. Half the game is chilling at your own pace, the other half is just trying to keep up.
Unbeatable will be released for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series in 2025.
Streets of Fortuna (Kitfox Games)
Kitfox Games develops and publishes video games, and this is one where the Montreal-based team does both itself. (And Kitfox does great work – just look at Boyfriend Dungeon!) Start your life in this generated sandbox RPG with nothing to your name, looking for basics like good and shelter. But how you get there is up to you. Will you be a thief? A cook? A smuggler? An artisan? A trader? Will you use your knowledge to your advantage when it comes to romance? What about politics? How will you survive Fortuna?
Streets of Fortuna will be released for PC via Steam.
