The Nintendo World Championships have been held in-person three times (1990, 2015, and 2017). It’s now time to take that up a notch in the comfort of your own home with Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, announced today for Nintendo Switch. It’s time to find out if you’re really that good at mini-games like collecting a roomful of coins in Super Mario Bros., snagging the sword in The Legend of Zelda, and clearing the first course in Super Mario Bros. 3.
I’ve seen a lot of people comparing Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition to NES Remix, and that’s fair. Released for the WiiU (remember that?), the game has players competing at an onslaught of rapid-fire challenges and mash-ups of over 25 classic NES titles.
In Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, old-school and new-school players alike will try to be the best speedrunner in over 150 challenges taken from 13 NES games: Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong, Excitebike, Ice Climber, Kid Icarus, Kirby’s Adventure, Metroid, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels, The Legend of Zelda, and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.
There are two ways to play. In single player Speedrun mode, unlock new challenges and unique in-game pins while setting and beating your own records. Party Mode allows eight players to locally compete. For Nintendo Switch Online members, you can enter the World Championships Mode to submit your best times in five challenges that rotate weekly to compete for a spot on the global leaderboard.
The game will be released digitally and physically. The physical edition – the Deluxe Set – includes a Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition game card, a gold replica NES cartridge and stand commemorating the 1990 Championships, 13 art cards, and a set of five pins. Pre-orders are open now, but yeah… good luck with that. They’re sold out everywhere!
Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition will be released for Nintendo Switch on July 18.
