It’s been a long five years (hello, pandemic!) since Read Only Memories: Neurodiver was announced, but it’s actually going to see the light of day in approximately two months. The game is a return to the vibrant cyberpunk world of Neo-San Francisco that was introduced in 2064: Read Only Memories (which DDNet has rated highly). Familiar faces are still there, too: Jess Meas (a gene-spliced hybrid lawyer), Tomkat (a notorious hacker), and Lexi Rivers (a former cop turned Private Investigator). A mere four years post original launch window, Read Only Memories: Neurodiver will be releasing this May for PC and consoles.
A telepath with the ability to delve into memories, ES88, is employed by Minerva. Minerva is a bit scary: it is a powerful organisation that specialises in neurotechnology and extrasensory projection phenomena. ES88 has been tasked with tracking down the Golden Butterly, a gifted psychic on the loose and wreaking havoc through subconscious minds of the city’s population. The Deep Dive mechanic allows ES88 to identify, manipulate, and unlock information; overuse can permanently corrupt her target’s memory.
Read Only Memories: Neurodiver introduces new characters, locations, and mechanics like the ability to dive and change the memories of others. The art has been completely overhauled. The unsolved case that needs cracking has multiple endings. Players will explore, manipulate, and unlock the memories of others. There are some new locations and new friends in Neo-San Francisco, but again, there are those familiar faces too!
The titled Neurodiver is a bioengineered psychic creature created to boost an esper’s natural abilities. With it, collect clues and thoughts in the subject’s memories while trying to piece together distorted fragments inside them. The goal is simple: push Golden Butterfly out! But who are they? Why are they causing chaos? How can they be stopped?
In a press release, Shintaro Kanaoya (CEO of Chorus Worldwide), says, “This is not one of Golden Butterfly’s tricks, but the final, final (we promise) release date for the long-awaited sequel. Truth be told, we wanted MidBoss to take the necessary time to craft an experience as memorable as 2064: Read Only Memories… and they have certainly delivered.”
Serenity Forge will be releasing two physical editions of the game: a standard edition and a collector’s edition. The standard edition includes the game, an illustrated inner cover sheet, a soundtrack download card, and an instruction manual for budding espers. The collector’s edition comes in a large collector’s box and includes everything from the standard edition plus a full-size artbook, a prismatic sticker sheet, a double-sided acrylic charm, and a unique plushie of the Neurodiver.
Developed by MidBoss and published by Chorus Worldwide, Read Only Memories: Neurodiver will be released for PC via Steam/Epic, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series on May 16.
