Have you hit a wall in Final Fantasy XIV Online? No narrative left to play? Level capped at 90? The good news is that it is time to head westward in the game’s fifth expansion, Dawntrail. There’s new stuff aplenty: areas, tribes, level cap increase, core battle content, dungeons, threats… you get the picture, but there’s even more to it. The expansion was announced in July 2023 (you can read more and watch the teaser trailer here), but last weekend we finally learned that its release date is set for early July 2024. Square Enix also detailed various editions of the game.
Head toward Tural and the city of Tulliyollal, exploring new areas like the mountainous Urqopacha and the forest of Yak T’el. Meet new Allied Tribes, like the diminutive Pelupelu who wear distinctive masks and live in the aforementioned Urqopacha region. New threats include Valigarmanda. The expansion also promises a new level cap of 100, two new jobs, new dungeons, new gear, expansive new lifestyle content, a PvP update, and the first graphical update for both character and world visuals.
Dawntrail’s Digital Standard Edition (PC/Mac, PlayStation, Xbox Series) includes only the expansion pack. The Digital Collector’s Edition includes bonuses detailed below. The Collector’s Edition (PC/Mac) includes the Digital Collector’s Edition and the physical Collector’s Box; players on other platforms would need to purchase the expansion and the Collector’s Box separately. The Collector’s Box is a set of five physical items: a special art box, a Viper figure, a cloth map, the Unending Journey, and a pen case (the game is not included).
The Collector’s Edition and Digital Collector’s Edition include three in-game bonuses. Head through the heavens in your own Ark, modeled after that in Final Fantasy IX (see the trailer below). Find companionship with a wind-up garnet minion, AKA a rendered mammet of Final Fantasy IX’s Garnet. And receive a chocobo brush, charming and twinkling with a star effect, to draw out the best in pictomancers (and only pictomancers).
Pre-order bonuses include Early Access (tentatively scheduled for June 28, accessible by users playing Endwalker and have completed certain quests), a miniature wind-up Zidane minion (basically a vanity pet), and Azeyma’s earrings. The useful earrings’ feature attributes will change depending on class/job, and anyone with a level from 1 to 90 will be granted a 30% EXP increase by defeating enemies while it is worn.
Don’t forget: Dawntrail is an expansion pack. You’ll need to own Final Fantasy XIV Online Starter Edition or Complete Edition, as well as an active subscription, to play. You’ll also need to own the Shadowbringers and Endwalker expansion packs.
Developed and published by Square Enix, Final Fantasy XIV Online is available on PC/Mac, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and on Xbox Series (as of last week). Patch 7.0: Dawntrail will be released for all current platforms (the PS3 version is no longer supported) on July 2. Pre-orders open on March 26 at 9:00 a.m. PT.
