Developed by Introversion Software, prison architect is a management game about construction and maintaining a maximum security prison. It won a BAFTA in the Persistent Game category and sold over two million copies. In 2019, Paradox Interactive acquired the rights for the Prison Architect franchise for an undisclosed amount of cash; the developer/publisher took over the game on all current and future platforms. And now, five years later, a 3D successor to the popular title has been announced as the creatively-named Prison Architect 2; it promises deeper simulation, greater player control, an inhabitant behaviour system, and creative options.
Prison Architect 2 offers advanced simulation systems, allowing players to construct intricate prisons with a lot of creative freedom in a 3D environment. Build structures to manage the inmates’ needs while also keeping an eye on the financials. There is a new connection system between the prisoners, who will now become friends or enemies with each other. This results in people chilling together, partnering up, or fighting each other.
Players use resources to build, manage, and control a prison with a playstyle familiar to those who played Prison Architect. Design every single inch of the prison, then manage everything from daily schedules to policies. Prison infrastructure can be established over multiple floors using new tools to create a state-of-the-art facility. The design of the prison will effect the prisoners’ lives all the time. There is a career mode that takes place across a brand new world map.
In Prison Architect 2, choices matter. They will decide the fate of the prison. Players have more control over the inmates, the prison policies, the architecture… pretty much everything. If the prison isn’t built properly there’s a chance of escapes, gang wars, and destructive problems.
“In Prison Architect 2, our team set out to create the next level in management gameplay, said Gareth Wright, Game Director at Double Eleven, in a press release. “A greater degree of player freedom, impactful choices, and inmate simulation come together to provide an enhanced presentation of prison management, in a 3D world. Much loved features make a return to help you manage your inmates, quell riots, prevent escapes and share your prisons, but now cross-platform! In addition to a new upgrade system, a new Career Mode, and more. We look forward to seeing how players get creative with multiple floors and catwalks to finally construct and expand in 3D. And then optimize and balance their prison’s safety, security and self-betterment.”
Developed by Double Eleven and published by Paradox Interactive, Prison Architect 2 will be released for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series on March 26.
