Earlier today, Sam Barlow admitted to trying to stealthily drop teasers for two games. He failed miserably, and it wasn’t long before the news was out that Half Mermaid Productions (his studio) had opened Steam pages for two new games: Project C██████ and Project D████. Redacted game information will be familiar to those who followed the development of Project A(mbrosia), which ended up being released as the brilliant Immortality in 2022 (Ambrosia is the name of one of the in-game films). And good news to everyone who has tired of hearing about Immortality from me, as the time appears to have come to start looking to future titles from Half Mermaid. Project B(astille) is on pause, but Project C and D are something to look forward to.
Barlow describes Project C (screenshot above) as “next level FMV,” recommending that players “hold onto your seats.” Here is its description, via Steam:
Something bad ███ ████████ ██ █████ ███ ███ ███ █████ ███████ ██████ ████. Some doors ████ ████ ███ ██████████. Some doors ████ ████ ██████████. ███ ███ ███ home?
For now we see through a glass, darkly;
but then face to face: now I know in part;
but then shall I know even as also I am known.
Project C██████ is the new cinematic ███████████ ████ Sam Barlow ███ Half Mermaid. █████ ███████ ███ for the first time ever in a video game █████████ ██████ ██ ████ ██████.
Barlow describes Project D (screenshot below) as “reinventing third-person horror again.” Barlow is intimately familiar with third-person horror, being lead designer and writer for Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Immortality is also horror, yes, but this is like Barlow returning to his roots. Here is its description, via Steam:
Something bad ███ ████████ ██ █████ ███ ███ ███ █████ ███████ ██████ ████. Some doors ████ ████ ███ ██████████. Some doors ████ ████ ██████████. ███ ███ ███ home?
Project D████ is a █████ █ survival horror ███ Sam Barlow ██ Half Mermaid.
██████ █████ ██ 1983 ██ █ █████████ ████ ████ ████████, ███ ████ ████ ██████ ██████ nurse █████ ███ ████ ███████ █████ ████ ███████ in ███████ ███. Be careful ███████ ████ ███ ████ ████ █ nightmare.
In related news, Lost in Cult has announced a nearly 550+ page book called Immortality: Design Works. It features the game’s script, behind-the-scenes essays, and interviews. It is the definitive exploration of Marissa Marcel’s genre-defining history. Honestly, though, if you’re gonna go for it you have to go for the Deluxe Edition. I’m going to be seeing it in my dreams as I try to put together well over $250 (Canadian) so I can own one of the 300 units. Each is housed is in a custom archival box signed by Barlow, and includes everything from complete linear annotated scripts to (fake) film tickets and even a (fake) police report. (Yes, I feel the need to state fake. You never know.)
Okay, so I may not quite be ready to drop the Immortality talk after all…
Developed and published by Half Mermaid Productions, Immortality is available for PC/Mac, PlayStation 5, and XBox Series.
