The next Steam Next Fest is next month (that’s a lot of nexts), which means developers and getting demos ready now. At full launch, visual novel The Hungry Lamb: Traveling in the Late Ming Dynasty will be available in English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Japanese – but the demo hasn’t been available in English. Yet. When Steam Next Fest runs from February 5-12, and English version of the demo will be available for the first time.
There are a couple things about The Hungry Lamb: Traveling in the Late Ming Dynasty that I find interesting. First, it is a text-based adventure with Chinese traditional style and music. Second, it addresses some really dark themes: human trafficking, cannibalism, and revenge. It’s not all negative, though, as it also coveys the positive emotions of being human.
Play as Liang, a bandit who accepts a human trafficking job of escorting four girls to Luoyang City. One of the girls, Sui, believes that the client is a swine demon who has been around for thousands of years and eating young girls. Sui’s hope is that Liang can help kill the swine demon to get revenge for her dead sister and all the other young girls whose lives have been lost. While traveling, gathering information and investigate the truth behind the job.
Liang and Sui both have tragic backstories. Liang’s family was in business for generations, but he wanted to travel the world as a knight-errant instead. But the Tianqi Explosion took everything in 1626. Afterwards, he became a refugee and bandit, making money by killing people. Sui is nine years old and mute. She seems to believe what she’s saying about the swine demon, but is it actually true? Some or all of her statements are lies.
The Hungry Lamb: Traveling in the Late Ming Dynasty a dark visual novel with controversial topics that push moral boundaries. There is a lot of choice, with nine different endings depending on the player’s choices. The game is set in the late Ming era (if that wasn’t obvious) and will explore the historical era a bit through the cast of characters.
Developed and ZerocreationGame, and published by ZerocreationGame and 2P Games, The Hungry Lamb: Traveling in the Late Ming Dynasty will be released for PC via Steam sometime during March/April of this year.
