The Legend of Heroes series certainly has its fans – big, bigtime fans – who are certainly loyal to the series. For everyone else, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to get on board with the series, as they all tend to feed into one another, and that’s certainly the case with the new one, The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie, which now has a release date for the West.
Trails into Reverie had first released in August 2020 in Japan for the PS4, later porting to various other platforms (the Switch, and Windows PCs) in 2021 and so forth. In terms of plot, it follows after the events of Trails of Cold Steel IV, acting as an epilogue of sorts, and although you’ll find a wave of independent enjoyment and entertainment from playing this upcoming release as a newcomer, some hardcore fans may argue that you can only truly enjoy Trails into Reverie to its absolute utmost when you’ve played them all in chronological order. Some key features as described by Nihon Falcom and NIS America, publisher, include an expansive story breadth, containing three separate arcs with the ability to switch between them with the patented Crossroads system. There’s also a “True Reverie Corridor”: a location filled with randomly generated dungeons across a wide variety of mini-games, allowing you to recruit new characters and hone your combat capabilities.
Nihon Falcom and its partners are notorious for taking their time to localise its most successful Legend of Heroes series releases, but then again the games are so big there’s not much choice there. The good news for English speakers is that the wait is nearly over. The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie will land on July 7, 2023, for North America and Europe, and just a week later on July 14 for Oceania users. It will be available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via GOG, Epic Games Store, and Steam.
