Disgaea has been around since the early 2000s, and has been a generally successful venture for the developer and publisher, Nippon Ichi. Unfortunately, the sixth game received a lot less love and attention from the series’ player base (though we loved it), but you can never keep a good thing down, and perhaps Disgaea 7 will be redemption for the series in the eyes of all.
This upcoming instalment’s story takes place in the “Hinomoto Netherworld Cluster”, a Japanese culture-inspired setting filled with quirky characters, friends, and foes alike! It follows the story of Fuji, a sort of clichéd wandering samurai, and otaku girl, Piririka, as they attempt to overthrow the evil Ooedo Shogunate, meeting various unique characters along the way. Of course, following the trend of previous Disgaea releases, Disgaea 7 will feature over-the-top and parodic dialogue and storytelling, offsetting your deep battle tactics and strategy synthesis with jokes and light-hearted banter.
One neat new feature worth looking forward to with this one will be its competitive online mode. Players will also have the option to put their teams to the test in ranked online player-versus-player battles, split into weekly stages.
Disgaea 7 is set for release on PS4, PS5, and Switch on January 26, 2023, in Japan, and although no western release date has been set yet, it would be incredibly surprising if Nippon Ichi didn’t bring a global release for its flagship property soon after.
