Earlier this year we reviewed a Chinese-developed tactics JRPG, Banner of the Maid. Set during the Napoleonic period, Banner of the Maid follows the story of Napoleon’s sister, Pauline, as she leads her armies into battles that are very reminiscent of genre classics like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Tactics Ogre.
Just about everything in this game is pure quality. The art is gorgeous, the tactics are deep and entertaining, and the music and overall presentation are top-notch. The only thing that lets this game down is some woeful localisation which, unfortunately, I can’t see changing for the console release, but I do hope that doesn’t stop you from giving the game a whirl anyway. It’s too good otherwise to miss.
The game will be coming to all three major consoles – the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. It doesn’t have a firm release date just yet, but it is confirmed to be landing this year. I’ll certainly be double-dipping. As much as I enjoy the game on PC, there are some genres that “feel” better on console, and tactics JRPGs is certainly one of those.
For me, it’ll be the Switch version. Sitting next to God Wars and a couple of Disgaea titles, Banner of the Maid will be perfect for gaming on the go.
