The film is being produced by China 3D, written by Chi-long To, and directed by Roy Hin Yeung Chow. To and Chow have previously worked together on 2012’s Nightfall and 2014’s Rise of the Legend. Pre-production will span the remainder of 2016 and shooting is expected to begin next year. It is expected the film will be released in China, Hong Kong, and Macau in 2018, but no further regions have been confirmed.
Dynasty Warriors, a tactical action series, is often touted as Koei’s most successful franchise. It is a spin-off of Koei’s Romance of Three Kingdom series, and has in turn had several spin-offs of its own including Samurai Warriors, Aslan: The Warriors of Legend, and Hyrule Warriors. Dynasty Warriors specifically references factual people but will often change how they are depicted for the sake of story. There’s no way of telling which of their characters will appear in the film, as there are over 80 playable in the series to date; perhaps they will go the Assassin’s Creed route and create a film with a main character that hasn’t been seen in the games (though not likely, since all the important people from the era are already in there).
