Emphasis on “app,” as Miitomo is certainly not a mobile game per say. Instead, Miitomo is Nintendo’s take on a social networking app.

Nintendo describes the app as a “social experience.” Mii characters can engage with friends in a lighthearted (digital) social setting. The purpose is to spark conversations between friends – or at least their Mii versions. People answer questions such as, “Do you believe in aliens?” or, “If you saw a nose hair sticking out of your friend’s nose, what would you do?” Another part of Miitomo is Miiphoto, a way to share photos that include your Mii.
Miitomo is designed to work with Nintendo’s new My Nintendo rewards program, with both launching in March of this year. My Nintendo is Nintendo’s new program that rewards users for interacting with products and services. Anyone in Australia or New Zealand that creates a Nintendo Account between 17 February and Miitomo’s launch will receive a Miitomo bonus. Those who pre-register for the app will be notified when it becomes available.
Nintendo plans to release five apps in 2016, including Miitomo.
