It’s that time of year again! The Christmas countdown is a tradition at Digitally Downloaded. Like the advent calendars filled with a chocolate each day, with our Christmas countdown we highlight a game each day that is perfect to help you get through the silly season.

Christmas is a time for family and friends, so it’s a good time of year to bust out the multiplayer games. It’s typically a time that people get some holidays, so it’s a good time to knock off some of those RPGs from the backlog.

More than anything else, it’s a good time for gaming. So grab a game or two from our little list and have yourself a Merry Christmas!

Day #14: Super Mario Maker

You couldn’t ask for a better Christmas game than Super Mario Maker. The core experience –that is, designing levels – is instantly comprehensible to seasoned games enthusiasts and can be taught relatively coherently to family members on the fly thanks to the Game Pad’s straightforward controls. These stages don’t need to be award-winning masterpieces of level design because the joy you’ll get from watching someone else stew over their creation for an hour and saving it to your hard drive for posterity is a gift in itself. Similarly, searching up a particularly creative or brutal level and then passing the controller off to a drunken friend can be equally pleasing.
If you’re just looking for an outlet to pour your own creative juices into, why not throw together a stage with seasonal flair? Although the game’s toolset isn’t necessarily as expansive as the likes of Little Big Planet, crafty Mario engineers have been able to piece together many compelling Christmas-inspired works.

Whether you’re designing frigid expanses or getting your kicks at the expense of others, this is one you can keep booting up all throughout the holidays and beyond.
