Okay, so I’ll try to stay coherenrfhzioe$ryhs&…
Let’s try again: I’ll try to stay coherent as I share with you newly-released information on the Danganronpa franchise.
A while back, Spike Chunsoft revealed the existence of Danganronpa V3 to our great rejoicing. The reason for its insistence on calling it “New Danganronpa V3,” rather than plain “3” has been finally made clear in the most recent announcement. The new game, New Danganronpa V3: A New Semester for Everyone’s Killing Life, will be part of a different storyline to that of the previous games, though it seems unclear as to whether it will still be set in the same universe. Taking place in and around the “Gifted Inmates Academy,” the game will see the return of Monokuma (and his Ultra Despair Girls variants, Shirokuma and Kurokuma), but futures new characters, such as a ridiculous-looking main character that appears to be some sort of cyborg or android. Much like its predecessors, it will feature exploration and class trials, but a new gameplay element is introduced: bluffing.
Though I feel some regret that this new game doesn’t seem to be continuing the intriguing and cruel storyline introduced by the previous games, I have every bit of faith that the masterful writers of Spike Chunsoft will be able to quickly pull me into this new setting.
Luckily, we will also be getting a sequel and conclusion of sorts to the current story in the form of an anime series, Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak Academy. This anime will be produced by Lerche and directed by Seiji Kishi — the studio and director behind anime adaptions of Persona 4 — and will feature Makoto, Kyoko, and Aoi.
While the the staff and studio involved don’t really inspire much confidence as far as original series are concerned, series creator Kazutaka Kodaka will be in charge of the original scenario concepts and will supervise the show. Kodaka states that it will feature content that can only be expressed within the anime medium. Something that makes sense, as I have often wondered how they would be able to conclude the storyline about the previous characters and world while keeping intact series staples, such as class trials and huge plot twists—often surrounding the “hidden identity” of the characters.
New Danganronpa V3: A New Semester for Everyone’s Killing Life will be the first game in the series to be available on PlayStation 4, but don’t worry as it will also return to the PS Vita. It as well as the anime are expected sometime next year. No Western release has been confirmed to date.
