Last year I embarked on a epic quest to write a book about games as works of art. Originally I gave Kickstarter a go to try and raise the funds to self-publish the book, but then the good folks at No Starch Press offered to publish it. The rest, as they say, is history.
A full year of research and writing later, and the book is now available for pre-purchase on the No Starch website (Amazon listing to come at some point later on). As you can probably guess, Game Art has been a passion project for me – literal blood sweat and tears.
It’s been an amazing process writing the book (and it’s been an excuse to travel to Japan no less). In the book will be 23 interviews with game developers from indies right through to the likes of Bioware. In those interviews are insights into something like 40 games. And of course loads and loads of beautiful art taken from the games, concept sketches, and the likes.
My hope is that the book gives people some insights into how game creators think about the games, and some of the deeper themes that underpin some of the most popular, interesting, and intelligent games out there. And at 320 pages, it’s going to be a nice brick of a book for your coffee table.
If you have any questions about the book feel free to ask me anything about it, of course! My only hope is you enjoy reading it as much as I have writing it.
