There are two new Etrian Odyssey games on the way. One of the more famous Wizardry clones is going to hit 2015 in a big way, with the next numbered release in the series – Etrian Odyssey V – being joined with a collaboration with Spike Chunsoft’s Mystery Dungeon franchise to create a roguelike that will land in Japan on the Nintendo 3DS on March 5.
Etrian Odyssey V will no doubt be a “safe” entry in the franchise which will offer more of the same that we’ve always enjoyed. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, though it is interesting that a release platform has not been announced.
The trailer gives absolutely nothing away, either:
Meanwhile, the Mystery Dungeon collaboration is a game that looks more like Mystery Dungeon than classic Etrian Odyssey, but the character art fits the theme. This one has me very excited. Etrian Odyssey games are known for offering a stiff challenge, and roguelikes at their best are unforgiving, but in recent years there has been a distinct trend to make them “easier.” Can this one take me back to a classic roguelike experience? I sure hope so!
Trailer below. Enjoy!
