What has been rumoured for a while has now been confirmed: Ubisoft will release a new Assassin’s Creed game specifically for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, since fans that haven’t upgraded to the next gen hardware yet won’t get to play Unity.
Assassin’s Creed: Rogue will take us back to a North American setting with Shay Patrick Cormac being the leading man. In this game players will actually be a Templar for the first time and tasked with hunting Assassins.
We’re promised ship battles, a New York to wander around, and plenty more besides. It’s being developed principally by Ubisoft Sofia with assistance from a couple of other Ubisoft studios. Ubisoft Sofia is, of course, responsible for my favourite Assassin’s Creed game to date, Liberation.
It’s clear that this game will, like Liberation, be a lower profile if not B-grade title, as Ubisoft redirects the bulk of its resources to next-gen game development, but then as we saw with Liberation, that can be liberating (pardon the pun) for the developers in terms of creativity.
