A wonderfully brief press release landed in my inbox this morning, with the simple news that Ubisoft has picked up the Tetris license for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. One assumes this means that EA has lost the rights to the license.

“We welcome Ubisoft to the Tetris family. I am 100 per cent sure it will develop one of the best versions of the Tetris game ever,” said the managing director of The Tetris Company, LLC, Henk B. Rogers, in the press release.

Given that EA has recently handled the Tetris franchise quite badly (Tetris Blitz was truly appalling), I’m quite glad to see this announcement. Ubisoft does have some skill when it comes to puzzle games (Lumines is excellent), and perhaps a new publisher will bring a new look at the classic formula that enhances, rather than detracts from the experience.
