Skylanders drifts on to iOS

Activision has never been a company to sit on something that’s struck a cord with gamers and the Skylanders series isn’t going to be any exception to that.

With a fully fledged console bound sequel already on the books for this year (Skylanders Giants), Spyro the dragon and crew have set their sites on the world of the App store with Skylanders Cloud Patrol.

“Skylanders is already a huge success both on consoles and the web with Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure and Skylanders Spyro’s Universe and we are excited to bring the franchise to the mobile platform,”said John Coyne, vice president, consumer marketing. “Now with Cloud Patrol, fans have a brand new way to interact with their favorite Skylanders characters on the go in fun a new form of gameplay.”

The game (available now on the App Store)takes place in a new area of Skyland and features over 30 characters to unlock. Don’t look for a Portal of Power though, because these Skylanders are opened up for use through special codes that you can find printed on retail packed figures… this is not a fact that means that there aren’t in app purchases available though.

Players can buy ‘currency’ (yes, that looks as weird printed as it does to say out loud) and use it to build their virtual collection of characters and magic if they so desire. But enough about microtransactions, you’re probably wondering if the game plays the same as the console version no?

No, would be the short answer there as Cloud Patrol puts your lil’ goblin or dragon in the seat of a sky-ship. Once strapped in to the cockpit, you can blast away at Kaos’ baddies in what effectively looks to be a shooting gallery/on rails experience.

Skylanders Cloud Patrol is available now exclusively on iOS for the magical price of .99 USD. And it’s a universal App too, which means troll blasting on the iPad, Phone, or Pod… Touch.
