Launching later this year, CCP Games’ Massively Multiplayer FPS set in the EVE Online universe will officially be free to play on your Playstation 3.
The closed beta for the new shooter began last December and will be expanded through this year until it’s full roll-out some time towards year end. Just announced today is that the game is going F2P. That’s definitely an interesting choice, and makes you wonder what CCP might have up it’s sleeve as goes DLC for the game.
“DUST 514 has everything you could want in a shooter: thrilling gameplay, spectacular graphics and an incredible strategic depth that comes from sharing the living universe of EVE Online,” said CCP CEO Hilmar Pétursson. “DUST 514 embodies the passion and creativity the world has come to expect from CCP, and we think PlayStation®3 owners will be amazed at the opportunity to play such a groundbreaking new game of this caliber for free.”
Sounds pretty cool and for fans of EVE who own a PS3, this is one download that’s kind of a no-brainer. There’s no release date yet for the shooter at this point, but players not involved in the beta test will be able to get their hands on the game and see what it’s all about at the EVE Online FanFest. That little party will be held in Reykjavik, Iceland this March 22-24. Convenient!
One thing’s for sure, free is a very good thing- and a fully featured FPS for free is a very good thing. It’s usually the strings that ‘free’ comes with that tend to get in the way. That’s something that we’ll have to see when DUST 514 finally does go on sale download later this year.
Oh I'm sure there's going to be some big strings that come attached to this. But still, free is the only way I was ever going to try this, so they won one more download, at least.

LOL – honestly? that was my sentiment too. It was a title that sort of caught my eye, but not really enough to want to buy it. But free? I'll take a peek at it then.
